Design Calculators - Long-term Settlement Under Liners

The purpose of these calculators are to evaluate the magnitude of long-term settlements related to elastic and consolidation deformation in the soil layers beneath the liner systems. The potential impact of these settlements on the performance of the leachate collection system and liner system must be assessed. The total settlement S of a foundation soil can be calculated as S=SE+SC+SS.

  • Immediate Elastic Settlement: Using empirical relationships, elastic properties of the soil layers, and estimated waste ground pressures, the vertical elastic settlements are calculated.

  • Primary Consolidation Settlement: The settlement of saturated inorganic clays and silts is predominately due to primary consolidation. Using conventional consolidation theory and estimated waste ground contact pressures, the primary consolidation settlements are calculated.

  • Secondary Consolidation Settlement: The settlement of peats and organics is primarily due to secondary consolidation. However, it should be noted that sites having peats and organics ae not suitable for building contemporary landfills due to excessive potential settlements conbined with high contaminant flow potential in leachate pathways.
